Chhat Puja Timings
Chhath puja is performed on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, which is the sixth day of the month of Kartika in the Nepali calendar. The exact date of the festival is decided by Central division of Janakpurdham in Nepal which is applicable all over the world.
It is believed that the Maga Purohits were invited by King Janak of Nepal for their expertise in Sun worshiping. They started the tradition of Chhat Puja for the first time in the world.
It is believed that the ritual of Chhath puja may even predate the ancient Vedas texts, as the Rigveda contains hymns worshiping the Sun god and describes similar rituals. The rituals also find reference in the Sanskrit epic poem Mahābhārata in which Draupadi is depicted as observing similar rites.
In the poem, Draupadi and the Pandavas, rulers of Indraprastha(modern Delhi), performed the Chhath ritual on the advice of noble sage Dhaumya. Through her worship of the Sun God, Draupadi was not only able to solve her immediate problems, but also helped the Pandavas later regain their lost kingdom.
It is also believed that Chhath was started by Karna, the son of Surya (Surya Putra Karna). Surya Putra Karna ruled over the Anga Desh (present day Bhagalpur district of Bihar) during the Mahabharat Age. He was a great warrior and fought against the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra War.
Its yogic/scientific history dates back to the Vedic times. The rishis of yore used this method to remain without any external intake of food as they were able to obtain energy directly from the sun's rays. This was done through the Chhath method.
The Sun God, Surya, the god of energy and of the life-force, is worshiped during the Chhath Puja to promote well-being, prosperity and progress.
Chhath Puja is also known as Surya Shashti, Chhathi and Dala Chhath.

By Zainab
Mulla
Karwa Chauth is one of the most auspicious festivals for a married woman. It is
considered in to form of a blessing for their husband’s well-being, prosperity
and wealth. Karwa Chauth is observed on the fourth day of October and
it is usually before Diwali. On Karwa Chauth a married woman is supposed to
not eat food or drink water. Nowadays, not only the lady of the house but also
their husbands observe fast which shows their bond of love for each other. When
it comes to attire, women cherish the festival and love to dress in their
bridal outfit.
1. This festival has
several traditional customs and rituals which have barely changed over time.
Karwa Chauth gave birth to the term ‘Pati-Parmeshwar’ which means husbands are considered as Gods. And it’s the duty
of their wives to serve them.
2. There is nothing
hidden as such about this festival but yes there’s lot which is less known
among the masses. So, here we have listed the less known facts one should know
about the festival.
3. The day starts before
the sunrise and women worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha and even the moon. It is believed that their utmost blessings help
one to gain well-being, prosperity, good fortune in the life of their husband
and family.
4. The most important
part of Karwa Chauth is that the mother-in-law hands over the ‘sargi’ to the daughter-in-law which must be consumed before sunrise.
5. The whole day, one
must not eat neither drink anything in order to make the fast successful. The
fast is hard but still it is believed that God grants those who keep the fast
with good things. On this auspicious occasion, married women must apply heena or mehendi which shows that they are ‘suhagan’ or married.
6. The married lady
receives a bundle of gifts from her mother-in-law which contains all that she
needs to enhance her beauty. On this day, Goddess Gauri is being worshipped and even her idol is made from cow dung.
7. Woman sits around the
idol with their bayas. They further place a pot which is full of
water in front of her. The karva is tied with the red thread and contains
kharia, aipun and little roli. At the start of the puja women apply teeka to
Goddess Gauri and even few drops of water are being dropped on her.
8. Elderly woman
narrates the whole legend of Karwa Chauth and pray for their husbands good
fortune. Once the moon is slightly visible, they offer prayers and observe the chanda mamathrough a sieve and then break their
fast. It’s very essential that the first sip of water and first morsel of
food is served by their loved husbands.
The trends and a thought
process towards Karwa Chauth have changed. Now a day’s loving husbands also
observe fast for their beloved wives and share the same chemistry with her. But
again, there are not many husbands who observe fast for their wives, when wives
can stay hungry and thirsty for the whole day why can’t there so called
husbands follow the same? Karwa Chauth surely strengths the bond between
husband and wife and also helps in maintaining good relationship with husbands
family.
